Why: Does your dog jump on other people, bark for attention or get into things they’re not supposed to? Are they easily distracted? Do they have a hard time coming when called? Then this class is for you!

What: We’ll help you bring out the best in your dog by showing you how to use positive methods to teach them the basic manners and life skills every dog should have. You’ll get:

-Tools to help your dog focus better in the face of distractions.
-Strategies for getting rid of behaviors you don’t like (jumping on people, play biting, demand barking, running away, etc).
-Help with training basic manners, including: sit, down, stay, go to your bed, jumping on people, recall, loose leash walking, leave it.
-Help addressing real-world activities and events with your dog, including: meeting other people and dogs, settling at home, walking in the neighborhood, having guests over, going on an outing and kitchen and mealtime strategies.

-Best of all, you’ll leave this class knowing HOW to train your dog, not just WHAT to train your dog.

-Focus on helping your dog learn to walk nicely on a leash in a lot of different contexts and real-world distractions
-Discuss the ins and outs of using – of course! – reward-based training, including reward removal and environmental reinforcers.
-Practice loose leash walking around numerous distractions (think: other dogs, yummy smells, food – even sheep!).
-Take you on a field trip in Olympia or Tumwater for the last class to take your new skills on the road.

Outta Control!

What & Why: Perhaps you have a social butterfly that loves to say hello but does it by jumping on everyone she meets. Or maybe you have an enthusiastic door dasher. Maybe your dog has trouble remembering what the word “Sit” means. Or perhaps it just feels like everything in the world catches her attention more easily than you can.

In short, if you sometimes feel like you live with a four-legged teenager that acts first and thinks later, good news: we’re here for you! In this quick class, we’ll help your dog learn:

-How to sit nicely for food
-Stop jumping on the counters/table/in your lap while you’re eating
-Wait nicely at the door
-Nicely greet other people
-Stay more focused in the face of distraction
-You’ll also get written materials in PDF format, as usual.

Please note, it’s lovely if you can bring extra people to class with you – they can help when we practice not jumping up! Also, this class is about an hour and 15 minutes, a little longer than our usual classes.

Calm, Controlled Dog Class

Why: For some dogs, certain environments and situations can cause anxiety and stress. This can lead to behaviors like pacing, whining, barking, inappropriate elimination, and destructiveness. Not to mention, causing stress in their humans!

What: Through a variety of training exercises and calming massage techniques, you’ll learn how to encourage a calm response and create focus in highly distracting environments. We’ll work in multiple settings and with many different distractions. You’ll be amazed to see how “zen” your dog becomes!

Advanced Manners: About Town

Where: Various locations in the Olympia area

Why: When you’re out with your pup in public, you want them to behave as nicely as they do at home. But new environments and situations can make your dog seemingly “forget” everything they’ve learned, including how to listen. And that’s no fun for anyone!

What: We’ll solidify the behaviors and manners we learned in Fun Foundation by taking field trips to places like the park, the pet store, and urban areas. It’s a great way to get help problem-solving behaviors in a real-world setting, so you can work towards having that “take anywhere” dog!

All-Levels, Dog-Friendly Hiking Club – Next Hike TBD

Who: People who are comfortable with being active and outdoors (obviously) with dogs who are well-mannered and not dog- or human-reactive or aggressive. Only one dog per human please!

What & Why: Happy Dog Institute and Big Fun Fitness (bigfunfitness.org) are teaming up to bring you a beautiful and dog-friendly hike! Are you looking for something extra to do with your dog? Are you interested in taking advantage of our gorgeous PNW scenery and hiking trails but aren’t sure where to start? Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or you’ve never been, we welcome you to join us on this adventure.

Polly Hawver of Big Fun Fitness is a pro at guiding hikes and helping folks feel comfortable and successful every step of the way, from what to bring and how to get there to how to be a successful hiker and proper trail etiquette. Heather Ringwood of Happy Dog Institute is an outdoor adventurer, PNW pro and dog lover, owner and trainer who will help you get the most out of this hike with your pup.

What we’ll provide:

-Brown bag lunch from Little General, depending on the hike (gluten free and vegetarian options available, there’s a whole menu! Click here to see it)! If lunch is included and you don’t want it, use the coupon code “NOLUNCH” at checkout to save $10.
-Carpooling for those interested/able. We will have to iron out logistics once registration closes.
-A Big Fun Fitness Hiking Club Guide, which includes info on what to bring for your dog in your day pack and much, much more.
-Training tips and advice along the way

-An orientation for introductions, trail etiquette and to address questions and concerns at the trailhead
-As much “hand holding” through this hike as you need – we are here for you if you’ve never taken a hike with your pup before or if you’ve taken ten thousand!

What you’ll need to provide:

-A day pack with items for you and your dog, as well as hiking gear and attire. We’ll email this all to you once you register for the hike as the date approaches, so you have plenty of time to prepare.
-A “Northwest Forest” parking pass ($5 per car), which Polly will help you purchase ahead of time. If we are able to figure out carpooling, we won’t need many of these.
-Your vehicle, if applicable. Please note that there is limited parking so we will carpool as much as we can – but we understand that unfamiliar dogs in tight quarters can be an issue. We’ll have to work this all out as the hiking date approaches!

In addition to enrollment in the Fun Foundation class, the Happy Dog/Happy Human Package gives you one hour of our undivided attention per week for a month to address your specific issues and concerns. We’ll use video review, phone and email support to guide you through four weeks in conjunction with our four-week Fun Foundation class.
