At Happy Dog Institute, we want you to feel successful, relieved and supported. We want you to develop lifelong skills that you can use over and over again for a whole host of behaviors and issues you encounter, both now and in the future. We want you to be able to take said skills home with you, and on the road, and on vacation and wherever life with your dog takes you.

To support this goal, we have a whole host of services to help you with your dog:

  • Do you need help with some pesky unwanted behaviors like jumping on people, pulling on the leash and coming when called (recall)?
  • Or is your dog exhibiting more complex behavior issues like fear, anxiety, aggression, barking constantly at other dogs or people, growling over food or toys, etc.?

Regardless, our team is here to help. Our goal is to give you real-life solutions and practical, common-sense tools. Here are some ideas to get you started:

WHY
Does your dog jump on other people, bark for attention or get into things they’re not supposed to? Are they easily distracted? Do they have a hard time coming when called? Then this class is for you!

WHAT
We’ll help you bring out the best in your dog by showing you how to use positive methods to teach them the basic manners and life skills every dog should have. Best of all, we’ll teach you HOW to train your dog so what you learn will transfer outside of the classroom! You’ll get:

  • Tools to help your dog focus better in the face of distractions.
  • Strategies for getting rid of behaviors you don’t like (jumping on people, play biting, demand barking, running away, etc).
  • Help with training basic manners, including: sit, down, stay, go to your bed, jumping on people, recall, loose leash walking, leave it.
  • Help addressing real-world activities and events with your dog, including: meeting other people and dogs, settling at home, walking in the neighborhood, having guests over, going on an outing and kitchen and mealtime strategies.
  • You’ll leave this class knowing HOW to train your dog, not just WHAT to train your dog. We know we already said this but feel it’s worth repeating!
  • Access to written materials in PDF format

Calm, Controlled Dog Program

$595

WHAT
So many dogs struggle with being barky, overwhelmed, nervous and “reactive” towards other dogs when on a leash. So, we made a class just for them (and for you)! You’re not alone. We’ve developed this comprehensive program to get you the most effective help with this common issue.

Combining strategies we’ve honed over more than a decade of training, we use conditioning, management, training games and strategies to help your dog calm down and relax. We’ll use a combination of private sessions and group classes – both with and without your dog – throughout this program.  We’ll help them learn to “turn it off” and relax, and to channel that behavior into things more helpful and productive. And, let’s face it – less likely to drive you crazy! It’s a win-win.

WHO
Dogs who are a good fit for this program
are ones that are anxious, uncomfortable, shut down, easily distracted, easily aroused, impulse-control-lacking, 0ver-excited and/or over-stimulated.

Dogs who are NOT a good fit for this program are ones that are significantly fearful of people or generally really anxious. It’s also not a good fit for dogs who are fighting with other dogs off-leash or in the household, or dogs who have a bite history. Contact us if you’re not sure this is the right program for you.

WHAT
1. An Initial consultation, 60 minutes (usually via Zoom)
2. Three 30 minute in-person private sessions to work on foundational skills with your dog
3. Two 30 minute in-person group sessions for pattern game and behavior building with our dogs (you won’t bring yours to these sessions)
4. Five 30 minute in-person group sessions with your dog
You’ll also get online content and a group support forum in conjunction with class.

WHEN & WHERE
Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings in Tumwater, Washington.

About Town: Four Weeks of Class
Open Enrollment

$140

WHO
Graduates of Puppy 3 Class (for dogs between 4-9 months) or our Fun Foundation 1 Class (for dogs over 9 months).

WHEN
Schedule varies, click here to see it.

WHERE
Olympia & Tumwater, Washington. Specific locations are TBA. Location examples include Marathon Park, Downtown Olympia’s Boardwalk, the PetWorks, Matchless Brewing, etc.

WHY
Feeling like you need some extra practice after Puppy 3 or Fun Foundation 1? Still needing additional help with loose leash walking, getting that reliable recall, and working around distractions? Want to keep up your momentum and try some “real world” applications? This class will help you “proof” the skills you learned in previous classes in an open-enrollment field trip context. Join anytime when there is room in class, and take four consecutive field trip classes.

WHAT
This four-week class will solidify the skills you learned in our Puppy 3 or Fun Foundation 1 classes. You’ll work on the following skills (field trip locations will depend on the season): loose leash walking, stays, coming when called, meeting other people and dogs appropriately, relaxing in public spaces, handling distractions with ease, and more.

In this class, we will:

  • Learn about the rules of recall and other strategies for helping your dog come to you in the face of temptation
  • Practice working around numerous distractions (think: other dogs, yummy smells, food, etc.).
  • Boost your confidence – and your success rate – in getting your dog to respond to you
  • Help you learn to take your dog for a walk without them walking you
  • Discuss the ins and outs of using – of course! – reward-based training, including reward removal and environmental reinforcers.
  • You’ll also get written class materials in PDF format.

Fun Foundation 1 Class for Grays Harbor County

Online Video Orientation + Four Weeks of Class

$140

WHO
Dogs over 16 weeks who are fully vaccinated (younger dogs should attend our Puppy 1 or Puppy 2 classes)

WHERE
Grays Harbor Veterinary Clinic in Montesano, Wa.

WHEN
Mondays evenings. Click here to view the schedule.

WHY
We’ve built our business on helping people communicate more effectively with their dogs, thereby increasing desirable behaviors and extinguishing annoying ones. We use science-based positive reinforcement methods that are also very effective. Let’s get to work!

WHAT
Starting an orientation to set you up for a successful class series and followed by four hour-long weekly sessions, you’ll leave class:

  • Understanding how dogs learn and function, including what motivates their behavior
  • With a solid foundation of behaviors like sit, recall (touch), attention, problem-solving distractions, etc.
  • With a dog who’s more mentally and physically exhausted (and you less so, hopefully!)

You’ll have the opportunity to attend an additional four week “Fun Foundation 2: About Town” session after this one. 👉🏽

You’ll also get a clicker and have access to the online homework portal with PDF versions of class handouts.

“We now can go into stores without any issues. He LOVES Home Depot, mainly b/c everyone there gives him cookies. But he does so, so well, walking right with us and not pulling on his leash or jumping at everyone….Thank you, thank you for all of your help and tips and tricks!! I always recommend you to everyone I meet.”
